Surf
A steady west-southwest swell running waist- to chest-high — nothing huge, but fun, and cleanest in the glassy mornings before the afternoon onshore fills in.
Weather
A damp, drizzly start to the week — proper late-May gray — then clearing and warming for the weekend. Water still cool, low-to-mid 60s.

Crowds
Memorial Day crowds thin out early in the week, but summer is officially on. Look for mellow weekday mornings and busier weekends.

Picking Up
In Season
Strawberries are at their peak, with cherries and the first apricots turning up at the markets. California avocados are in full swing too. Good week to hit the farmers market.
Local Wildlife
Whale season's changing shifts. The last gray whales are heading north, the first blue whales are rolling in for summer, and dolphin pods cruise by daily. Worth a scan from the Heisler bluffs.
Laguna News
Main Beach tower
The beach shade ban is now in effect — no pop-up tents or canopies on city beaches, single-pole umbrellas only, except the designated zones at Main and Aliso.
The Sawdust Art Festival turns 60 this year — the milestone season runs June 26 to Sept 6. Buy tickets here
Active Culture bumped its summer hours — the Coast Hwy cafe is open till 9pm now.
Laguna Lore
Legend has it Laguna's first surfer was George “Peanuts” Larson, riding here by the early 1930s. In 1934 he shaped a board at the Main Beach lifeguard tower, then hauled a local kid, Dick Metz, down to San Onofre in his Model A. Metz, born in Laguna in 1929, learned riding tandem on a 100-pound board too heavy to carry home, so he'd just leave it on the sand.Vintage Laguna surfer
That's it for this week, see you out there!
